A community is a distinctive workspace within the portal containing pages, portlets, and subcommunities. It is created by a business unit or a group to provide a forum for sharing information.
This page lets you:
Select the community template
Switch to a different community template
Add or modify the community pages
Enable or disable the community Knowledge Directory
When you create a new community, you must choose a community template. This community template determines a set of required pages and—if configured—enforces a header and a footer.
To select a community template:
Click Select Community Template, then choose a template and click OK.
If you do not want this community to inherit future
changes to the template, deselect the Inherit
the Template checkbox.
If you select to inherit changes, any change applied to the community
template affects the community. For example, if a page template is removed
from a community template, the page created from this template will be
removed from your community as well.
Click OK.
After a community is created, you can select a different community template to use. When selecting a different community template, note the following:
Portlets added to a community page associated with a community template will be lost when you switch community templates. If you switch back to your original community template, you will need to re-add your portlet.
If you have set special headers and footers for your community, switching to a community template that enforces a header or footer will remove your header or footer.
To switch to another community template:
Click Change Community Template, then choose a template and click OK.
If you do not want this community to inherit future changes to the template, deselect the Inherit the Template checkbox.
Click OK.
The first page you add to a community, whether directly or via a community template, will be the home page of your community. You can later change the order of the community pages and assign a different page as the community home page.
To add a page to the community:
Click New Page. (If you are an administrator, you can also create a page in the community folder from the Create Object drop-down list.)
Select a page template and click OK.
If you do not want this page to inherit future
changes to the page template, deselect the Inherit
the Template checkbox.
If you inherit the page template, you cannot delete portlets associated
with the page template, but you can add portlets to the page created from
the template.
If you do not inherit the page template, you can delete portlets associated
with the template, add new portlets, and change the page layout.
Click OK.
Community pages appear as links within the community. You can set security on individual pages so that all users who have access to a community may not see all pages in the community.
Pages added to the community can be deleted. Pages that are part of a community's template cannot be deleted from the community, but can be re-ordered.

A powerful feature of communities is the community Knowledge Directory, which community owners can access and modify by visiting the community. You can only turn the Knowledge Directory feature on and off in the Community Editor (the default setting is disabled).
